If this does not scream for Health-care reform, I don't know what does!

I recently came across a story on the Huffington Post about a woman who was denied health-care due to a sexual assault. When she was prescribed anti-HIV medication as a precaution after her sexual assault, she was dropped from her health-care because she was prescribed this medication. Here is website she recommends and I agree that women generally have to pay more for their health-care.

Best Job Search Assistance Site

Hi Friends,

Here is the best job search assistance site I've found, and I've been looking for a while! Check it out: http://www.jobseekerhelp.org/index.html

They have everything you need, including a job search engine that is TRULY easy to use. I hope this job market loosens up soon. In the meantime, just keep applying and take good care of yourself. This is also a good time to consider freelance work to pay the bills while you're looking, and a great way to see new companies and network. A great source for that is Linkedin as well as jobseekerhelp.org.

You should also have an industry specific site or two based on the job(s) you are looking for. For example, I'm looking for an Employee Benefits Account Manager, Benefits Manager, or Senior HR Generalist position. My job search websites are: jobseekerhelp.org, Linkedin, craigslist, simplyhired, shrm, and employee benefits. Those last two sites are industry specific to HR and Employee Benefits, respectively, while the other sites provide good general coverage and freelance opportunities.

Have a great weekend everyone!! It will get better soon.

Emily Dickinson Quote

When I was getting my mammogram, I saw this beautiful quote in the waiting area: http://academic.brooklyn.cuny.edu/english/melani/cs6/hope.html

Please check it out, and remember ladies, to get those "boob pancakes." My dear husband thought of that. This is in the spirit of breast cancer awareness month and I wanted to add to that message.

As an aside, related to health-care reform, I had to make many calls to make sure the Carol Ann Reed Center was "in-network" as a provider on my individual plan. After being misinformed by my insurance provider, I called the mammogram provider directly. They were able to clarify very quickly that they were in-network and provided mammograms.

I want to spare you on all the boring details but can we please get back to letting our local doctors be in charge of our care? It works soooooo much better. They can be trusted, you know?

Hello!

This is very exciting! I've started my blog. I've been thinking about doing this to write about my experience as a HR professional and how that mixes with our current times and my personal experiences.

There's so much to talk about that it's hard to know where to start. I've got about 10 minutes before I have to head off to Yoga, so I think it's only fitting to start off with the importance of wellness and balance in one's life.

I've been freelancing for the last year due to the lovely job market, and I've noticed how easy it is to get out of balance. In my first freelance job, I gained 20 pounds in 6 months because I did not have time to take care of myself.

Generally, when one is hired into a freelance situation, the "you know what" is hitting the fan. And that was certainly the case in this assignment. However, I learned a-lot and enjoyed the experience so that's a plus.

However, one of the main things I learned from this experience, is how important it is to "mind the house" so that your organization does not lose momentum. It's not worth it to hang tough and try to do everything when you have a number of key employees leave from a department. In this case, the HR department. The toll this takes on the department as well as the overall organization is not healthy.

In the year that I've been looking for a full-time position, I am amazed at all the changes I have seen in the job market. I went from June of 2008, when I was moving back to the Bay Area from Seattle and starting my job search, where I was getting a great deal of "call backs" on my resume. The market was hot!

Fast forward to Dec. of 2008, totally cold. January, still cold. February, still cold. March, okay, I'm really getting worried! April, phew!, I landed my next assignment through Linkedin (love Linkedin by the way). I leave it here for now. Got to get to Yoga! Remember, balance is important everyone! Have a great weekend. Hang in there... it will get better.
